Ascent Trip ReportOld Snowy is a great hike and is little traveled this early in the season due to moderate snow covering the trail. We encountered snow at about 5,500, but as this is around treeline, found that navigation is quite easy if you are competent with a map.
(Later in the season, this area boasts of some of the most magnificent flower beds in the Cascades.)
We placed a base camp out of the restricted area at the base of Ives Peak. From this camp, we hiked two hours to the summit of Old Snowy and descended snow fields back to camp.
We returned the trailhead via the same trail (did not hike the Goat Lake Trail loop)
We saw a heard of 40 in the valley below Goat Lake and 20 mountain goats east of Snowy on a ridge.
