Ascent Trip ReportI set out alone for this hike just after 6 am, and made excellent time to the trail split for Algonquin. Fairly rocky and steep hike up to the junction for Algonquin and Wright, and took the split for Wright. Again, a very steep and rocky trail. Though it wasn’t as windy as the day before, and much clearer, it was still quite windy and a bit chilly. After some pictures and a quick break, I headed back down to make my ascent of Algonquin. The trail continued to be very steep and rocky, and finally reached the summit around 11. Gorgeous views on a nearly perfectly clear day. Headed back down Algonquin, and shortly after took the split for the Iroquois herd path. Not very difficult trail, a few scrambles and LOTS of mud. Stopped to eat a sandwich on Boundary, the intermediate peak. Met up with a father and daughter on the way over, and attempted to find the herd path to Marshall to no avail. Headed back over to make my descent down Avalanche Pass, where I was very glad to have my poles. Extremely steep and rocky descent made for slow going, but eventually made it down to Avalanche Lake. Stopped here for a quick bite to eat before continuing back towards the Loj. Uneventful return for the next ~6 miles, Marcy Dam was very packed, but not too surprising for a Saturday afternoon. Excellent hike, and a breathtakingly clear day.
