Ascent Trip Report

After staring at the ADK High Peaks trail map the night before, I found a route that would allow two more high peaks than the currently planned trip (just Marcy). I was able to convince Sarah, from Big Moose Lake who was also staying with us, to join me. We hit the trail at 5:45am with clear skies. We arrived at Marcy Dam around 6:25 as the sun rose and hit Colden, with the lake reflecting like a mirror. After pausing to soak in the scenery, we continued on, not breaking again until we reached Indian Falls. We refilled our hydration bladders here with my filter, and ate a small snack before continuing. As we neared the summit of Marcy, the wind began to pick up on the exposed rock. By 9:00, we were standing on the highest point in New York State. We spent about 15 minutes on the summit, in and out of the clouds, eating a snack behind a rock sheltered from the wind (we guessed it was gusting to around 60 MPH). We headed down Marcy toward Four Corners, and from there we began our ascent of Skylight. In less than an hour after we had begun our descent of Marcy, we then stood on the fourth highest point in the state. The views from here were much more rewarding as skies began to clear. After another short snack, we descended back to Four Corners, and then to the Mount Gray herd path, beginning just past Lake Tear of the Clouds. The ascent of Gray was quite muddy and fairly steep, and we arrived at 11:30, a nice time to stop to eat our lunch. We now realized that it was for the most part all downhill from there, though we were still nearly 10 miles from the Loj. We followed the Feldspar Brook trail until its end, where we turned toward Lake Arnold. The trail from there was mostly flat, and we arrived at back at Marcy Dam at around 3:00pm. We beat the others back, who left at 7:30 am for their ascent of Marcy. At just over 21 miles, we were pleased with our average speed of over 2 miles per hour.
