Ascent Trip Report

Steep trail but worth it with great views along both sides of ridge line. From the Gavilan trailhead its a little over two miles to the intersection with the Lobo Peak trail (with about 2300 feet elevation gain). At that point you're at roughly 11200 feet. Left heads toward Lobo Peak; straight ahead to Columbine campground; right towards a couple of unnamed 12000 footers on the way to Gold Hill. The trail climbs steeply from the junction to about 11600 and then winds along the ridgeline just below a knob listed at 11792, down into a small saddle where I saw a herd of nearly 100 elk (who were kind enough to pose for a photo before running off). It hits about 11,800 just below the peak leaving an easy scramble up the slope. I'd guess it's around a mile from the trail intersection to the peak.
