Ascent Trip Report

Steep climb but worth it! Parked at Williams Lake trail head. Past Phoenix Restaurant at the sign to Williams Lake go straight ahead onto a service road for the ski resort. Climb up on these roads under one chair lift and up to the top of the next one. This part is quite steep. Just above the 2nd chair lift there's a building with a sign marked 11819. This took me almost an hour and a half. A path behind the building leads up to a microwave tower and then to an unnamed high point (12012 according to the topo map). From there the path follows the ridge line down a couple of hundred feet. You're on a narrow ridge with great views down both sides. After about a mile you go by a cabin and hit the boulder fields at the base of Kachina Peak. Although there's a semblance of a path, it's hard to follow. Stay close to the edge of the ridge line closest to the Ski Valley. Lots of loose rocks and some scrambling across boulders. A pole stuck in some rocks marks the top. Communed with a mountain goat before heading back when I started to hear thunder.
