Ascent Trip ReportI used Michael Schwartz's driving directions to get to the TH and Gary Fallesen's excellent hiking route. My findings and differences are noted below.
The highpoint is located at the southwest corner of the County. My approach was from the east after visiting the Madison County highpoint. This is beautiful rolling country and on this day I passed a lot of cyclists.
From the junction of hwys #13/80 in Woodstock Rose and I drove west on #80 for 6.3 miles to the village of Fabius and turned south (left) on Bailey Road just past the village. At the Y junction at .3 miles we stayed right on asphalted Shackham Road (unsigned) and travelled 2.3 miles to a crossroads (no signs, but there is a sign post on the left). We turned left on the Dirt Road and travelled/climbed northeast for 1 mile to a T junction with Morgan Hill Road (shown on goggle map and in Fallesen's book) where we turned right (south) and continued .75 miles to the TH on the left..... on the left is a short dirt driveway that leads to the trail (an overgrown woods track) and on the right is a pull off for a few cars. My GPS coordinates here were 42.79303, 75.99597. The highpoint is east of this TH.
From the TH (0.0 miles) the overgrown/wet woods track heads east-southeast to a fork (.35 miles), stay left and continue generally northeast to a clearing (.6 miles) with another fork. As you enter the clearing look back and you'll see 2 signs on the left "State Land Forest" and a yellow "Posted Private Property", I missed them on the way in. Exit the clearing on the immediate left, as the woods track exits north but immediately turns generally northeast. Arrive at a crossroad (.75 miles) just before the summit area. Fallesen refers to a second clearing and posted signs of Big Bucks Club of Fabius, which I didn't see. I must note that the wood track from the TH to here has a number of swampy/whale sections that you must circumvent. As I arrived at the crossroad the highpoint is at about 10 o'clock (northeast), between the left track and the one continuing straight ahead, 80 yards into the woods (.8 miles). I walked up both tracks and into the woods always looking for the high ground. This wooded summit area is fairly flat with a lot a barbery shrubs, I went in circles trying to find the highpoint, very hard to do. I chose the highpoint as having the coordinates 42.79530, 75.98350 ..... 1.6 miles, 1 hour RT.
COURAGE DOES NOT ALWAYS ROAR ..... SOMETIMES IT IS A QUIET VOICE AT THE END OF THE DAY, SAYING "I WILL TRY AGAIN TOMORROW".
