Ascent Trip ReportOur trip up Wheeler Peak began around midnight. After a quick drive up through Taos with a stop at Eske's for dinner (the 'Fatty' is delicious) we grabbed a few hours sleep at the Taos Ski Area before starting our summit attempt.
Our first couple of miles up to the Bull of the Woods meadow was hot a steep. We could see the steam pouring off us every time we stopped to catch our breath. The trip ended up being timed well with little weather and no moon light.
We made the summit around sunrise and after a little breakfast, a couple of photo ops and a quick call on the cell phone we started back down. Our initial thought was that we would descend the Williams Lake Route but we decided to descend back the Bull of the Woods Route to see what we had missed during the night. Our decision did not disappoint and we were offered all the scenic eye-candy we had missed in the dark and we were able to bag Mt. Frazer on the way back. At one point, Dave and I were run off the trail by a herd of cattle being pushed up the mountain.
We probably saw about 2 dozen big-horned sheep at various intervals above treeline which was a first for both of us.
