Ascent Trip Report

Climbed with Dean. We parked at the end of road 1850 and then bushwhacked up to the east ridge. this took about 1.5 hours in heavy brush. Thankfully we found a nice trail on the ridge. This trail went over Coney Peak, down to Coney Pass and then up the south slopes of Round Mountain to a rocky open area southeast of the summit at about 4,500 ft elevation.

We could see across the little basin and see the steep slopes of the upper reaches of Round Mountain in front of us. Snow covered about 50% of the terrain. I could see old foot prints in the snow heading north to the upper parts of the little basin and it looked like we could circle the basin and then follow ledges up to near the summit across the face of the south side of Round. That is exactly what we did. We crossed several snow fileds, climbed steep heather covered slopes, followed an old trail through some scree and just kept heaing up. We reached the south ridge of Round Mtn a about 5,200 ft and then climbed the snow up to the summit.

Great views surrounded us in all directions and a crystal clear day. We could see Rainier, Baker, the Olympics, Whitehorse was just across teh valley and all the Cascades were displayed in all their glory. This climb was worth it just for the views. Fantastic!!
