Ascent Trip Report

Gorgeous day for a hike, lots of other people around. I hiked from the Williams Lake Trail near the Bavarian Restaurant, started out at 8AM. Nice and easy through the woods up to Williams Lake. Then it gets really steep, the trail shoots straight up to the peak, no switchbacks. So steep I was almost standing on my toes, feeling it in my calves. Great workout! Saw dozens of cute furry little varmints (later found out they're called marmots) towards the top of the trail by the scree slope. At the top you end up in a saddle, left is Walter Peak with a post on top of it, right is Wheeler Peak, which is where I went. Got to the top in 1:45. Hung out with the tame chipmunks on top and took some photos of the amazing views. Then I saw some movement down below looking towards Williams Lake, and there was a herd of bighorn sheep (seven). Massive animals. Thrilling sight. The trip down was a breeze compared to the trip up, still took me 1:30. Most people take a different trail up (Bull something trail), it takes longer but not as steep.
