Ascent Trip Report

Came up Long Trail from Rt. 108. Parked near the information signs close to the Stowe gondola. Partly sunny conditions all day. Still a lot of water on the trail most of the way to the top. Not many people on this trail, many more on the ridge line. Quite windy once we reached the exposed portions of the mountain, temperature dropped at least fifteen degrees at the top. Stopped at the Adam's Apple on our way to the Chin. Had lunch at the Long Trail trail junction in the col between the Adam's Apple and Chin, which was out of the wind. Climbed to the Chin, where the trail really was a climb in a few places. Visibility was excellent all day. We were able to identify Mt. Marcy, Jay and Big Jay, East Mountain, Mt. Washington, Camel's Hump, and of course Lake Champlain. After summitting, we walked along the ridge to the Cliff trail, which we took down to the gondola for our reward, a scenic ride to the bottom. The Cliff trail is challenging, requiring scrambles over exposed boulders and a bit of dexterity to navigate successfully. Do not take dogs or small children on this trail.

Total gain for the entire hike was 3171 feet, according to my Garmin GPS watch. This includes going to the Adam's Apple and back down again to the col. Total elapsed time was 4:38, which included lunch, a snack stop on the way to the ridge line, time to play on the summit, numerous stops to take pictures or simply take in the amazing views, and time at the gift shop and gondola ride down. The gondola ride took about fifteen minutes. We estimate our actual hiking time as about 3:15 or so. Two more VT County High Points completed!
