Ascent Trip ReportAfter getting Karen and Sarah successfully up the tallest peak in Maine via the Knife Edge the ladies were ready to go down and tired. Danny and i wanted to peakbag Hamlin while we were up there so we added another 500 to 600 feet to our day and journied over the Table Lands and the saddle and found this peak. The ladies went home the saddle trail. Despite us having 3 miles to their 1.5 miles and gaining another 550 feet we reached the trail junction over 30 minutes ahead of the ladies and had to await them. Karen, like last year had worn out her legs and was down to a 0.5 mph crawl home. The day the took in all 12 hours and the ladies did 9.5 miles and Danny and I did around 11 miles. The trip could have been done in say 7 hours but still was very proud that Karen and Sarah did such a big day. Over 4,000 feet of vertical and lots of technical scrambling!
The best part of the Hamlin route back was the isolation. Danny and i had the entire Table Lands and Hamlin ridge to ourselves all day back. Whereas Baxter Peak had like 30 people on the summit, we enjoyed similarly excellent views from Hamlin with no people! The views are not as spectactular as the Knife Edge and Baxter but still as nice if not better as anywhere else in Maine. I want to go back next time and avoid the crowds and do the Howe Peaks next time.
