Ascent Trip Report

Directions: Head east out of Austin, NV on highway 50 and turn right(south) on state route 376. Just passed milemarker 5 turn right (west) at the paved road signed for "Kingston", follow this road to the hamlet of Kingston where there is a small store (hours vary) and head into Kingston Canyon, after four miles from 376 the road turns to dirt and is narrow as it follows alongside Kingston creek, but it is passable in a sedan if driven slowly watching out for sharp rocks. The Toiyabe Crest Trailhead (TCT) is on the left about 9 miles from highway 376 and about 1/2 mile passed Groves Lake, there is a parking area for several vehicles and a picnic table. Elevation 7400ft. From here the well defined but narrow and brushy trail quickly crosses a nice wooden bridge over Kingston creek and traverses south in moderate switchbacks to a saddle at 9100ft, from here just follow the TCT as it sidehills around subpeaks and follows ridgelines gradually gaining elevation until you reach point 10579 where you will lose 400ft of elevation descending to a saddle and up to point 10371 where you will need to descend another 500ft to a side trail that heads east for about 1/4 mile. Climb the moderate NW slope to point 10653 and then follow the ridgeline south to the summit. There are several granite outcroppings along the ridgeline but if you stay to the left (east) of the ridge crest the difficulty does not exceed easy class II. The summit registry is in a glass jar.(the last entry was from a year ago). This route is mostly a walk up but I gave ascent quality a 4 due to the length and the extra elevation gain
