Ascent Trip ReportColorado County Highpoint - Moffat County, County Seat - Craig. Used Mitchler and Covill's excellent book "Hiking Colorado's Summits." This is my 34th Colorado county highpoint attained, of the 61 Colorado county hghpoints in the 64 Colorado counties. (Three highpoints are shared by two counties each, counting Huerfano's northeast summit of Blanca Peak as a separate highpoint.)
A very pleasant hike with great Colorado July weather. Jim and I spent 55 minutes on the very flat wooded summit plateau. There was a great view south from the small summit cairn. In the woods were still patches of snow. We returned to the sign inscribed "Black Mountain East Summit 10,801 ft." Then we walked a short distance (one minute) from the trail to the east edge of the plateau where we found the Benchmark Welba 10,801 ft, imbedded in some rock stickihg out east, which gave surveyors great views east to the two Bears Ears peaks and beyond, and the surrounding countryside and peaks north and south.
The excellent trail to the summit plateau is in the woods most of the way, and very pleasant. Before the few short little switchbacks near the end, which has one very short section across some rocks, one is briefly on the eastern ridge with views down into the woods to the north, where there were still some patches of snow in the deep shade. The wildflowers were lovely. As Mitchler and Covill state, a great hike for children, and we really enjoyed it too.
