Ascent Trip ReportExhausting!!! Usually there is no effort required to reach the top of Clingmans Dome but when I was there the road to the top was closed. I had hiked up Mt. Rogers the day before so my legs already had a 11 mile strenuous hike in them but I added a 14-mile round-trip to them today. Ouch! My legs cramped up on me on the return trip to my car but I made it! I hiked all the way up from Newfound Gap but it was worth it because it was one of the rare times to enjoy this Appalachian summit and not have to share it with the crowds. I only saw 2 other people briefly at the summit--other than than I had it to myself. Very foggy though. It's really not the most scenic stretch of the Appalachian Trail but I always enjoy hiking at higher altitudes and there's a great view (normally) at the top when you get up there. Highest point in Great Smoky National Park. State High Point # 23.
