Ascent Trip Report Winding up the Tioga Road out of Yosemite, Andy was really excited about climbing up Lembert Dome to get some photos of the sunset over the park. That didn't interest me so much as an excuse to climb to the top of another peak, but I'm really glad he convinced me that we should stay up top until after the sunset.
This hike is very easy and well marked, with the most difficult sections being a few muddy stream crossings and a class 3 scramble up extremely good granite just below the summit. If you really just cant stand the thought of going up a 45 degree incline, there is a really broad shoulder just below the summit that offers 270 degree views - not bad for a consolation prize.
Just below the final scramble I came across a family anxiously chattering and gesturing at the terrain below. There was a bear and her cub wandering around just above the trail route. It was my first bear sighting and it nearly rounded out all of the Yosemite wildlife for me. I never did see a cougar, but I'm totally fine with that!
After the bear wandered off into the woods I finished the ascent to the top. There's a boulder on top of the otherwise bare dome, which I commandeered for a seat to watch the sun dip over the western mountains. It was quite fantastic! After taking about 100+ shots, Andy and I beat feet back down the trail, hollering nonsense to avoid an up close bear sighting. We made it most of the way down before turning on our lights, arriving back at the parking lot a few moments after nightfall.
