Ascent Trip ReportA fine summit and a nice straightforward hike - very welcome after yesterday's Tour Salliere ascent. Also a good place to see Nutcracker, if you like Alpine birdlife.
The trail starts down in Champex village at N46 01 50.0 E7 06 57.1 but parking is limited. Having started walking (07:00) we discovered another trailhead a little higher, with parking, at N46 01 55.2 E7 06 57.5, 1529m. The trail is fiddly at first - watch carefully for signs. Once above the houses, however, it is obvious, zigzagging steeply through woodland. There is a fork at N46 02 29.2 E7 07 01.7 (2224m). L is the main route; R leads by a very small detour to a nice viewpoint - worth a visit - then contours back to join the main trail. We were surprised to see the trail descending, in all about 100m, but there are reassuring signs and it becomes clear that a difficult section of ridge is being bypassed. Finally the path climbs steeply, crosses the ridge then soon arrives at the summit. It was a little cloudy (as usual there is no view of Grand Muveran) but Salliere and Haute Cime are very fine; there are intermittent views to Grand Combin.
After a break we head down, treat ourselves to an ice cream then drive north, intent on Sommet des Diablerets this afternoon.
