Ascent Trip ReportSupposed to be a full moon hike to see the sunset & moonrise from Moosliauke and then hike down in the moonlight. Driving up from Massachusetts was overcast but as an eternal optimist, especaily regarding fog, I thought...it'll burn off....ya it'll burn off and we'll have great views. We left the trailhead at 5:15 PM, got caught in a couple of rain showers. The fog/clouds never did burn off and because it was Moosilauke i.e., very windy and overcast/fog with no views at the summit, I didn't eat anything except for a powerbar and a handful of gorp. I paid the price and my body shut down about 1/2 mile from the trailhead. A 10 minute rest and a 50 mg Hammer Nutrition Espresso Endurance Gel and I was fully recovered.
The most incredible thing I saw on this hike was a huge white moth about 5 inches long with a wing span of 8 inches that was drawn to our head lamps about midnight. At first I thought it was a dove. The moth flew in and around our group of 4 for a couple of minutes and then we lost sight of it.
