Ascent Trip Report

Supposed to be a full moon hike to see the sunset & moonrise from Moosliauke and then hike down in the moonlight. Driving up from Massachusetts was overcast but as an eternal optimist, especaily regarding fog, I'll burn off....ya it'll burn off and we'll have great views. We left the trailhead at 5:15 PM, got caught in a couple of rain showers. The fog/clouds never did burn off and because it was Moosilauke i.e., very windy and overcast/fog with no views at the summit, I didn't eat anything except for a powerbar and a handful of gorp. I paid the price and my body shut down about 1/2 mile from the trailhead. A 10 minute rest and a 50 mg Hammer Nutrition Espresso Endurance Gel and I was fully recovered.

The most incredible thing I saw on this hike was a huge white moth about 5 inches long with a wing span of 8 inches that was drawn to our head lamps about midnight. At first I thought it was a dove. The moth flew in and around our group of 4 for a couple of minutes and then we lost sight of it.
