Ascent Trip Report

3 day trip
Comments: First trip with SPS, taken to satisfy the first of two required outings for WTC course graduation. Mosquitos were out in force; they were really bad around sundown.

1st Day - Hiked 8 miles with 4,000' gain over Olancha Pass to PCT camp at about 9,700'. Very steep, hot, tough hike on Olancha Peak Trail for the first 4 miles to Olancha Pass - 3,300' gain over this section. Relatively flat second 4 mile stretch on PCT with 700' gain over last mile or so to camp.

2nd Day - 8 mile round trip with about 2,400' gain to summit of Olancha Peak. Last 1.5 miles over steep, high Class 2 terrain with about 1,500' gain. Route up was on west side of Peak; route off was over much less steep terrain on north side of peak.

3rd Day - 8 miles out over PCT and down Olancha Peak Trail. Temperatures in the mid-90's coming down OPT.
