Ascent Trip ReportThe preceding night was uneventful. We woke up a few times during the night to stir around as Luiza and I had zipped our sleeping bags together for added warmth, which was welcome; the platform made for cold air flowing under the tent. It rained from around 5:30am through 7:30am. We decided to get up when it stopped. Fixing breakfast and drying as much stuff as possible took a while and we left camp around 9:00am.
From there it wasn't long before we hiked past the cabin. There were still people inside and it smelled good of firewood. We kept going and about 40 minutes later, we were inside the clouds near mont Xalibu's summit. There was a short spur to take to get there, and Luiza stayed behind. I dropped my pack and ran up, coming down staight away. There were no views and it was chilly up there.
Then we started descending along the crest. We were lucky to catch a break in the clouds from then on. This is the most beautiful piece of trail in the whole of Parc de la Gaspésie and it was as beautiful as I half-remembered from when I had hiked it (although almost completely engulfed in the clouds then) when I was around 11 years old. We met some of our campmates that had left a little before us that morning when they took a break there. They left as we stopped for pictures and we never saw them again. Then when we got to the treeline, we started to see hikers coming up. From there it was a formality to get down to lac aux Américains, which would be our lunch break. We stopped there around 15 minutes, time to eat and drink. From there we hiked towards the parking, where Luiza and I would separate. She would go back to the park service center while I would hike to mont Richardson and then back to the service center. But as soon as she engaged in the trail, she faced a huge 'closed' sign. She decided to follow the road with me and keep going along the road instead of the trail. When we got to mont Richardson's parking area, we kissed goodbye and I was on my own.
