Ascent Trip ReportThis day started out bad but got better as it went along. I got a speeding ticket on 93 on the way up. NH is terrible about tickets; definitely just a way for them fill gaps in their budget.
Once we started hiking, it was a great day. The weather was fantastic, and the Basin-Cascade trail was beautiful. I hiked in the riverbed for part of the way up and it was awesome seeing the water flowing down the huge rock riverbed. It made for some really cool pools, and even one spot where the water was flowing in fast, making a circular vortex in the depression, then pushing out due to the speed of the water. Very cool. Higher up on the Kinsman Pond Trail, the trail was simply the rocky bed of the brook flowing out of Kinsman pond and we had to step from rock to rock. This was also really fun, but made for some slippery stepping.
Kinsman Pond was beautiful, if murky. The shelter there is top notch and looks great. I imagine it is very comfortable and sleeps quite a few people.
The hike up to North Kinsman was pretty typical, and the summit of North was pretty uneventful, we walked right over it without even realizing it. We pushed on to South Kinsman, stopped for a quick snack and some photos, then headed back to North for lunch. We went out to the view point on the east side of the peak and ate lunch with some fantastic views of Franconia Notch, Kinsman Pond, and Lonesome Lake. Some kind of Hawk came gliding by us very low, riding the updrafts, which was really cool to see.
After Lunch we headed down Fishin' Jimmy trail to the lonesome lake hut. It was a bit crowded here, with such a nice cabin and all, and there were a bunch of high-schoolers there. The girl in the cabin was very nice, and the spring water was delicious and cold, which was very refreshing on such a hot day. We headed back down the Basin-Cascade trail, and I tried to descend the river as much as possible. I managed to follow it all the way down to the highway, but I found that this wasn't the branch that led to the Basin, so I had to find a tricky river crossing, then run the quarter/half mile back up the highway to get to the car.
We got back into Boston just in time for a traffic jam at about 7:30PM
