Ascent Trip Report

What a hike! Started at the Garden at 9:15am, where I was met by a man coming out who said he just talked to someone who had seen 2 bears. Great start to the day. Signed in and headed for The Brothers. I didn't really stretch or anything before hand, so I was a bit unprepared for the steepness that The Brothers pose. Got to the top of the second brother and broke my camera. Face down into a deep mud puddle. I didn't really need it past that point though, as thick fog and low-lying clouds quickly obscured what views I had gotten of the Great Range. Down off the third Brother and into the forest. This was quite a different trail then those which I had been on in the Marcy Dam area, much more vegetation and ground cover. The trail was muddy in spots. Saw a couple HUGE snakes. Made my way up the steep slope of Big Slide. Tried monkeying with my camera again, only to drop it again and put it out of its misery. Found the Colvin summit marker at the top at 12:30pm. Enjoyed a PBJ sandwich in the company of a very curious mouse who appeared to fancy PBJ sandwiches. I told the mouse about the snakes and didn't hear from it again. A big group of kids could be heard coming to the top, so I packed up my stuff and got ready to head down. For some reason, they never actually came to the summit. NOAA radio on my GPS said that skies would be clearing, so at 1:15pm I headed down the Slide Brook Trail right behind the big group. Slipped and fell hard on the slides. It was fun though. Just as I got to the Phelps trail around 3pm, the skies opened up (a weather man is never wrong!). Donned my rain jacket and unpacked my pack-cover and away I went. By 4:30 I had made it back to the car, just in time for it to stop raining. My first loop!
