Ascent Trip ReportA point-to-point counter clockwise traverse of the Baldface Range over 6 Peaks, moderately steep trails with some scrambling at a number of very short ledges. The open rocky ridge trails from Eagle Crag to Baldface Knob are outstanding/exhilarating ....... overall 13.7 miles, 4671 feet ascent in 8 1/2 hours.
Today's counter clockwise route started at the Mount Meader TH on hwy #113 just north of North Chatham. I ascended the Meader Trail to Mount Meader (from the TH follow the woods road to its very end and the start of the trail, its signed), then the Mount Meader Ridge Trail over Eagle Crag to the Baldface Circle Trail. The Circle trail goes over North and South Baldface on the way to Baldface Knob. From here I went over Eastman Mountain, then the long descend on the Slippery Brook Trail to the Baldface TH Parking on hwy 113, .6 miles south of the Mount Meader TH (noted above).
The Baldface Circle trail (a loop route starting and ending at the Baldface TH Parking) which is somewhat shorter than the one I took (9 miles) is very popular. I met numerous groups up on the ridge (one a huge school group out for 4 days)), interestingly all going clockwise. I took numerous short snack breaks and took in a lot of liquids, as usual I moved slow on the ascends with a lot of huffing and puffing. Had to answer nature's call on one occasion, somewhat unusual. Overall an uneventful day. I would highly recommend this open ridge hike. Rose dropped me off at 7h00 hours, she'll go into town for the day. The plan is to stay at the same Hotel in North Conway for the next three nights. Tomorrow will be a rest day, followed by huge climb over the Montalban Ridge (7 peaks) the next day. I estimated today's hike at 9 hours.
Rose picked me up as scheduled, I somewhat fatigued but no real problems except for some ankle soreness. I am looking forward to a huge pasta dinner.
