Ascent Trip Report

Directions: Take US hwy 50 to Austin, NV, head east out of town and climb a winding road to Austin Summit(7484ft) then descend and shortly take a left at the signed "Grass Valley Road" follow this graded gravel road for 29 miles traveling past geothermal rigs and the Grass Valley Ranch to a dirt road heading east into the Simpson Park Mountains (it is a couple hundred feet passed an old gravel pit). This road is rough and rutted, high clearance needed, it may be passable in 2wd if the road is dry. Shortly go through a wire gate and proceed up gentle slopes towards Wood Canyon, the road becomes a grassy two track and may be hard to follow. It is 2 miles to a sign warning the dangers of mudslides during rain due to a previous fire. Shortly passed the sign is a good place to park in a level grassy area by a grove of pines and a creek(seasonal?). From the parking area walk up the canyon through grass and scattered sagebrush following sporadic cowpaths, you may have to cross the creek a few times, it is only about a foot deep and narrow. After about 1-1/4 miles and 6500ft leave the creek bed and head east up easy to moderate open grassy slopes to point 7738.From here follow the ridgeline towards point 8282ft then you can save a 200+ extra elevation gain by sidehilling to the north of point 8690ft through aspen groves to a saddle at 8400ft with a fenceline running up to the summit area,( the aspen groves look intimidating but are manageable if you study a route through them from the ridgeline). Head uphill next to the fence until about 200ft from the summit then you will need to weave through openings in the trees and brush with a small amount of easy scree crossings. The summit is covered with low brush but plenty of good views. Register is in a glass jar.
