Ascent Trip ReportThis highpoint is also one of the multiple candidates for the highest point of Beaufort County, SC, which is the reason I visited it. For my complete report for the county highpoints, see the SC section of cohp.org. The paragraph below is specific to the area on Port Royal Island.
This one was a surprise, as I expected to find a manmade hill. I drove west some four miles on SC 116 from US 21 to the Laurel Bay Navy Housing Area. A military decal is required to enter without making advance arrangements or dealing with visitor control. After navigating a maze of one-way streets, I arrived at the school and quickly found the bump. This is at the edge of a large natural area and has very mature live oaks growing on it. It obviously predates the school and is not out of place in the hummocky terrain in the immediate vicinity. Lacking evidence to the contrary, I believe this area should be considered natural and be added to the must visit list of Beaufort County highpoints. Being in the 45-49 foot category rather than 40-49 feet also enhances its stature, notwithstanding its small area of the highest contour.
