Ascent of Sommet de Lure on 2010-06-02| Date: | Wednesday, June 2, 2010 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | Car | | Peak: | Sommet de Lure | | Location: | France | | Elevation: | 1826 m / 5991 ft |
Ascent Trip ReportA near drive-up, either by the very impressive north side, where you are amazed that there is a road, or by the gentler south side. It appears you can dirve up a rough track to within a few m of the summit but there is also parking below at the high point of the road pass at about 1745m.
From there it takes about 10 minutes to walk up to the extensive summit installations. The actual high point, which I was surprised to find outside the fence on the north side, is marked by the usual small French trig point. The view down the precipitous north face is impressive, as is the panorama of peaks stretching from the west (Mont Ventoux to the north (Pic de Bure is prominent) to the East (one can even see Monte Viso on the border with Italy.
