Ascent Trip Report

Directions: Interstate 80-Exit 112 for Coal Canyon, follow this paved road(east)for 13 miles and turn left onto another paved road signed for Dixie Valley,(set odometer). Pavement ends at 8.5 miles and becomes graded gravel. 12.5 miles the road curves heading north at 21 miles it starts to climb up to McKinney Pass(5573ft)reaching the pass at mile 27 then starts to descend into pleasant valley. Mile 31.3 take the LEFT fork(north) onto another well graded gravel road signed for Grass Valley/Winnemucca, continue north staying on the main road to the junction with Golconda Canyon road at mile 42.5 from the turn-off at Coal canyon rd. A car with good tires can make it to the Golconda road junction. Golconda road is a rougher road but still 2wd up to the canyon entrance at 1.5 miles from Grass Valley Road.

Route: I parked at the entrance to the canyon and walked up the canyon road for 1.5 miles to the 1st steel gate (Important Note: there are private property signs/no tresspassing signs posted along the road, I luckily located the property owner just north at the Vesco Ranch, she stated it is OK to pass through as long as you; LEAVE GATES AS YOU FIND THEM, STAY ON THE MAIN ROAD and DONT ENTER ANY BUILDINGS in other words respect private property so access will continue to be available! This is subject to change, so if in doubt check at the ranch). 3/4 miles further is another steel gate and the Golconda Canyon Ranch continue past the ranchsite and in 1/2 mile(elev5550ft) you will reach a junction with a steel gate posted " Private property, not a public road, access can be revocable at any time" if you drove to this point I recommend parking here. Take the LEFT fork and head north on a dirt road that shortly passes through another steel gate crosses a stream and gets rougher turning more into a jeep track with washouts along the road edge and 20foot drops into the creek below. A few sections of the road are so narrow due to washouts that I would be surprised if anything other than an ATV could get by. From the junction, follow this road for 2 miles approaching a mining site and some switchbacks then leave the road(elev6300ft) and head NE up a moderate sage/tree covered slope towards the ridgeline at 8000ft. The slopes will soon open up and stay a moderate to easy grade. Follow this ridgeline and at 8400 feet it connects with a jeep road and a fenceline, stay on this road to 9000ft, the summit of Tobin will be directly to the west, climb the STEEP slopes approx 800ft to the summit. I replaced the rotten/waterlogged registry with a new one(I salvaged what I could of the old one) and placed it in a PVC container. NOTE: The road to the Golconda Ranch is narrow, with blind curves and 100ft drops to the creek below(no guardrails) use extreme caution if driving! Also, if the upper slopes of Tobin are snow covered, I recommend crampons and ski poles, it is a steep slope and a long slide down the eastern side. Finally, the jeep road that goes to 9000ft might be accessible just after you pass through the last steel gate,a road heads off to the right, but I am not sure and also do not have any information on the road conditions.
