Ascent Trip ReportFrom US-9W just south of Haverstraw, go west on CR-90/South Mountain Road for 1/2 mile to the junction with Ridge Road. There is safe, legal parking on the grass at the SW side of the intersection. Walk a short distance west and downhill on CR-90 about 75 feet past a wide utility right-of-way to an unsigned and unblazed, but obvious trail, which is the Long Path. Hike north on the good trail where you should see teal blazes almost immediately. If not, it is not the Long Path. Hike north, steepest near the top, to the summit of High Tor. Wonderful views--bring a lunch and stay a while.
The NY-NJ Trail Conference map of the NY section of the Hudson Palisades shows the trail, although the L.P. trailhead has been relocated since my 1991 edition was printed. It also has a nice drawing of the summit view that identifies the many peaks visible from there.
The Long Path continues west along the ridge almost 1 1/2 miles to Little Tor, IMO worth the hike. See my Little Tor T/R for the continuation.
