Ascent of Buck Mountain on 2010-05-30
|Date:||Sunday, May 30, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||9159 ft / 2791 m|
Ascent Trip ReportFrom US 50 drove Newark Valley road from east of Pancake Summit as it heads due north to Barrel Spring. There we bore right (NE) to signed junction toward Beck Spring and followed road (better than mapped 4WD track) to saddle W of point 7439. Drove (high clearance) west on mapped, then unmapped track to just west of junction 7786.
From here it was a walk up the east-northeast ridge of the mountain to the location of benchmark BUCK. The cliffs on this ridge seemed to be very prone to optical illusion - they consistently looked larger and farther away than they were. We could always bypass on the south anything we didn't want to climb over. Our final approach to the summit went on the north side of the ridge.
My sighting, and sightings reported in the register by John Vitz, confirm that the BUCK benchmark spot is higher than spot elevation 9141 on the subsidiary summit to the north. I'm not certain, however, where the 9159 elevation comes from.
