Ascent Trip ReportToday's goal was to climb the remaining 7 peaks on PB'S "Belknap Range Summits" List, East of Round Pond.
I started out at the TH, the large parking area northeast of Mount Major, on hwy #11 North of Alton. I ascended to Mount Major via the Main Trail, over to Straightback South, then a counter clockwise loop over Straightback/Quarry/Rand/Klem/Mack/Anna and back Straightback South. I then returned to Major and descended via the Main Trail back to the TH parking ...... 11.8 miles, 7 hours RT
Overall the mostly wooded trails were well maintained and moderately easy, except for the Quarry Trail (Straightback South to Klem) ...... steep, very rough, poorly blazed and hard to follow in a number of places.
The summits were wooded with no views except for Major, Straightback South and Mack. The panorama of Lake Winnipesaukee area from the Mount Major summit is simply outstanding, evidenced by the huge number of people (lot of families). I'm always impressed how easily young kids can go up and down mountains.
There were well over 100 cars at the TH parking, it overflowed onto the highway. This is a popular place.
The only real negative today and yesterday were the black flies ..... really bad, I had no bug spray. I moved all day with very few stops due to the dam black flies, I had to eat on the run stopping only to get stuff out of my backpack. I would have loved to lay on an open vista and enjoy the scenery. I ended the day somewhat fatigued.
