Ascent Trip ReportThe high point of North Carolina. I had not visited the park since the new summit observation tower was completed. While I liked the older tower, it needed replacing. The summit benchmark is in the center of the observation deck. While you can drive to the a parking lot a short distance from the summit, I chose to hike the Old Mitchell Trail, a four mile round trip. It is listed as a moderate to strenuous trail. I did not find it difficult. For those wanting a shorter hike, you can do the .75 Balsam Loop trail. It ends at the paved walkway to the summit. For those not wanting any trail hike, you can park in the summit parking lot and walk the paved path to the summit. On a clear day, you can see a huge portion of the Blueridge Mountains to Clingmans Dome in the Smokies. There is camping at the park and they now accept on-line reservations. It's a beautiful park. http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/momi/main.php
