Ascent of Signal de Botrange on 2010-04-20| Date: | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Signal de Botrange | | Location: | Belgium | | Elevation: | 694 m / 2277 ft |
Ascent Trip ReportAnother drive-up complete with visitor's centre. This time the saving grace a thirst quenched in the bar which serves top quality Belgian beers. A bizarre tower like a giant trig point with airplane style steps leading up to a tiny platform stands behind the buildings. Apparently the purpose is so that one can stand 700m above sea level (the "natural" top is 694m in altitude). Surrounding area is a massive plateau covered in mossy bog with some pine forest. Looks like large tracts of the lower grampians in Scotland rather than the forests of the Ardennes that I had been driving through for much of the afternoon. Weird.
