Ascent Trip ReportEasy/moderate trail climb.
From Mont Barnston, west of Lac Lyster in Quebec, I drove/entered the USA at Norton, Vermont, then travelled south on Hwy #114 a short distance to the Gore Mountain TH at the north end of Norton Pond (west side of the mountain).
The trail leaves the TH Parking on Hwy #114, in a southeast direction. The trail was bare and somewhat wet at a number of places except for the last half mile where it was hard packed snow, I postholed a number of times. There were moose tracks and tons of droppings, I scared up a few grouses. The whole of the mountain is open deciduous forest except for the top part which is open evergreen. I just love being in a deciduous forest this time of the year, the open bare surface reminds one of a woman minus her clothes.
The wooded summit is capped with an abandoned fire-warden's cabin and tower foundations, for views you have to find your way to the summit's perimeter...... 7.6 miles, 4 hours RT.
I drove south to Newport, NH and found a room at Newport Hotel, tomorrow, weather permitting, the plan is to climb Croydon Peak just north of here. The rain started late in the evening as forecasted.
