Ascent Trip Report

Left campus at about 7:30am with Andy Cassier and Paul Eichas en route to the ADK Loj. We had originally planned to hike Algonquin, but changed our plans to hike Table Top and Phelps. Set out at about 9:30am with dark, ominous clouds overhead. Reached Marcy Dam in just over an hour with skies beginning to clear, but still fairly overcast, though the temperature was comfortable, allowing me to remove my jacket and wind pants that I had on over my shorts. Continued on, with the high water bridge having been carried away, which made for an interesting but fairly easy river crossing. Continued on toward Table Top, and when we reached the junction for the split toward Mount Marcy, Paul decided to wait for Andy and me at Indian Falls. Andy and I continued on, donning our snowshoes about a mile short of the summit after Andy had post holed. There was still over a foot of snow from here up, and a thin spine for the last half mile or so. Some fresh snows and blow down on the summit, with skies still relatively overcast with the summit of Marcy still in the clouds and limited views. Descended and met Paul at Indian Falls, where we took a quick break for lunch as skies continued to clear. Set off back down the trail toward the split up to Phelps. Trail was fairly icy in spots, but some open areas on the way to the summit gave us a preview of the views to come. Reached the summit of Phelps and were rewarded with sunny skies and excellent visibility, we were able to see Mount Mansfield off in the distance. Enjoyed the views on the summit for about 15 minutes before descending back toward Marcy Dam. When we reached the dam, the skies had begun to cloud over a bit again, but the temperature was still very comfortable. Just as we reached the Andy’s car, it began to rain for a bit. Our timing could not have been better. Enjoyed a nice dinner at the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery as it was Andy’s 20th birthday before heading back to campus.
