Ascent Trip ReportA VERY TOURISTY VISIT.
We came to visit the Vatican while in Rome ...... my brother Mimmo with wife Julie, sister Rosaria with husband Robert and my Rose. It's sort of weird to be adding this very touristy visit as an ascent to Peakbagger.
Vatican City, the world's smallest self-governing sovereign state, is built on a small hill and is a walled enclave within the city of Rome near the Tiber river ...... unparalleled in the world and a must-see destination while in Rome. The highpoint is an unnamed location off limits to the tourist, somewhere behind the Basilica, security is extremely strict.
An elevator takes you to the roof of Saint Peter's Basilica and stairs to the top of the dome for a spectacular view of the grounds (the walled enclave is only about 3km in circumference) and the city of Rome.
Addendum 1 dated December 2006 ... Rose I have been back to the Vatican on 2 different occasions since this first visit.
