Ascent Trip ReportDecided to “swing by” Mount Mitchell on our way back to Winston-Salem from a 3-day vacation in Gatlinburg, TN. In the end, the little side excursion added almost 5 hours to the trip. The state park is a bit off the beaten path, but there were also because of road closures due to rock slides (interstate 40) and recent ice storms on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was a fairly warm and hazy spring day, high temps about 80 degrees. Drove up the curvy 3-mile road, passed the visitor center and up to the upper parking lot. The top of the mountain was in the low 50s and still had some wet, slushy snow on the ground. Walked a few hundred feet up to the observation deck at the summit. I wasn’t looking for a strenuous climb as I was still recovering from hiking the Chimney Tops trail in the Smokey Mountains the day before. Spent a few minutes admiring the scenery at the top and eventually snaked our way back to civilization.
