Ascent Trip Report

Artski and I paid to get into Custer State Park and parked at Sylvan Lake. We were told to allow four hours for the hike, but it was getting late in the day and it would be after sunset if we took that long. We started the hike anyways, and walked quickly, jogging some of the time. The route was not always clear, but we always found the right trail. Many groups passed us going downhill. Eventually we entered the Black Elk Wilderness. The trail became steeper and near the top there were many switchbacks, steps, and even a metal bridge. We walked into the fire tower at the top and took in the amazing views from our first state highpoint. On the way back down we picked up the pace to beat sunset, which had consequences. We made it back to the car in around an hour and a half, but Artski's knees were hurting rather badly from the downhill running. It took him a few days to recover.
