Ascent Trip Report

The Terry County highpoint is a spot elevation of 3,602 feet set back in from the highway in some of the ugliest landscape on earth. I came in from the north from the town of Whiteface.

From Whiteface, I drove south 15 miles on FM-1780 to the Cochran-Yoakum county line sign. The Terry County highpoint is at its northeast corner, about a mile east of the highway I was on. A sandy track runs southeast toward a windmill, and from there, an oil pipeline (with accompanying access road) runs near the Terry County highpoint. I could have parked along the highway at where the sandy track starts, but I felt uncomfortable leaving my truck alongside the road, and attracting attention to my presence.

Instead, I drove north a couple miles into Cochran County, and followed a lesser road east, where I had room (and a tree) in which to park, with my truck reasonably well-hidden from the highway. I had my bicycle stowed in the back, so I rode it south back to the sandy track entrance, shimmied under the fence, and tossed the bike into brush where it would remain hidden. The track was way too sandy for a bicycle.

I hiked to the windmill, but the road was very muddy, and I found myself hiking alongside it in the brush. That prompted me to abandon the track altogether and aim cross-country toward the highpoint. My plan was fool-proof: I'd either come to the fence line or the oil-line road, and then follow them to where they meet near the highpoint area. That is exactly what happened. I came to where the two met, then spent time walking in all directions to be sure I had covered the area sufficiently.

I retraced my walking route back to my bike, got myself back onto the highway, then somehow rode it north two miles back to my truck in a stiff headwind. This highpoint required some actual work: 6.5 miles of non-motorized travel. I even broke a sweat.
