Ascent Trip ReportHarvey BM at Raven Cliff
After a small family reunion in Trenton, GA, I drove up the Sequatchie Valley to Flattop Mountain and Raven Cliff. My father came with me on his first high point excursion.
The drive north on TN Highway 28 from I-24 is nice.
Turn right onto Highway 111 shortly after Dunlap and go up the mountain.
Keep an eye out for hang gliders soaring over the valley near the scenic pull off.
At the top of the mountain, take the Lewis Chapel Road exit and turn left on Lewis Chapel/Jimmy Johnson Rd.
Turn left onto Raven Cliff Rd and into the Raven Cliff subdivision.
Once in the subdivision there is an unsigned gravel road lead leads to the top. It may take a little exploration as none of the roads are named but we were able to drive almost right up to the contour, just walk up the hill to the overlook. If/when you see a sign for Shadowland Homes, bare left and stay on Raven Cliff then there is a right turn on to a gravel road to winds its way to the top.
The Harvey BM has been slightly disturbed by construction but is still present in a large concrete block. The view of the Valley is very good on a clear day.
Go back down to Lewis Chapel and take the very first road right next of TN-111. This road eventually leads up near the other contour.
My father got scared that my car wouldn’t make it up the gravel road or we would be shot not long after turning onto this road and so, as to not turn him off of high pointing, I reluctantly retreated back to Chattanooga for the day. I don’t think I won him over a county high pointer but he did enjoy the trip and view.
Laager Youth Camp – tri county junction
The last area is the tri-county junction of Grundy, Marion and Sequatchie counties on the property of Laager Youth Camp (which is looking a little run down). It is on TN-108 near the Grundy and Marion county HPs and one can see the county line signs for Grundy and Marion counties at the entrance. I visited in November so there were no campers around but I parked at the gate and wandered into the camp. There is a small rise by a stand of trees behind the bath/shower house.
The most direct (less mountainous) way to this high point is to take exit 155 off of I-24 and head north on US-72/TN-28 12 miles toward Whitwell (locally pronounced Whu-wool). Bear left onto TN-108 just south of town and go about 10.5 miles.
Tri-county junction 2380 ft 35.31910 -85.55840
Raven Cliff (2380+) 2380 ft 35.37273 -85.31909
