Ascent Trip Report

The Franklin county highpoints are located on Mounteagle Mountain; two are near a fire tower and one is in a back yard.
The Sewanee fire tower has a Forest service house and is only occupied periodically when there is a danger of forest fires (I guess). There were two ‘good ol’ boys’ from the Forest Service there when I visited. Climbed the tower but could not get above tree line for a good view. BM is on right as you drive in, in front of the house maybe 100 yards off road.
The forest service guys said the view from Rowe Gap fire tower has much better, but it was 30 min out of my way…maybe next fall…
Take exit 134 off I-24 at the top of Monteagle Mountain and go west on US-41/64 for 2.6 miles
Turn right on Firetower Rd and then right to drive up to the tower. The microwave tower is about .1 mile through to woods to the east
The third point is on the other side of the highway on Midway Road near Echo Ln. It is in someone’s back yard but he was friendly and did not mind my wandering in his yard. He said a few other people had come by in the past for the same reason.
Addition: 6/26/09 – Rowe Gap Tower would have a great view on a clear fall day and isn’t far off US-64. Check it out if you have time.
