Ascent Trip Report

Left campus shortly after 7:00am with Pete Edwards and Paul Eichas. Decided on a relatively easy hike, Cascade and Porter, as Pete wanted to get ready for his trek to Marcy in two weeks. Hit the trail at about 9:30 and began the ascent, which was relatively slow as Pete was not conditioned (putting it kindly). The day before a woman had lost her dog and was on the trail searching for him, Leif, a black poodle. We hoped that he headed towards town as the low the night before was in the single digits. Reached the summit of Cascade shortly after 12:00, which was down to bare rock with sustained winds of about 35 MPH. We estimated that the temperature with wind chill was around -35, and accompanied with low visibilities we began out descent shortly after summiting. Descended Cascade, had a quick bite to eat and headed over to the summit of Porter, which was also cold with low visibility, but not nearly as windy. On the descent, we heard what we thought to be 6 blows of an emergency whistle, thinking that someone was in distress, but were relieved to find that it was just the woman calling her dog. Overall trail conditions were relatively well packed with a fair amount of ice in certain places, but overall an enjoyable hike for my first two winter high peaks. Stopped by the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery for an early dinner and arrived back at campus about 6:30pm. All photos that were taken were with a 15mm fisheye lens.
