Ascent Trip Report

High adventure is tough to come by in our nation’s breadbasket but sometimes even a relatively simple highpoint can hold it’s share of challenge. This was certainly true of my recent visit to Wisconsin’s highest geological point.

At 1951 ft and a parking lot less than a quarter mile from the summit I figured this would be a quick tag for my state highpoint list, but this would be a boring article if that was the case. As it turned out Timm’s Hill County Park in which the “majestic” summit resides, was closed for the season. I ended up parking at the entrance and hiking the road turned cross country ski trail turned mushy mess to the official trail head. There is nothing worse than walking on 8” of rotten semi-compacted snow. The recent spell of rainy spring like days had taken it’s toll on the trail. It was like walking on a beach covered in snow cones. This would be a great place to go cross country skiing when conditions permit. The trail appears to be lit and well groomed.

I tromped the mile or so to the trail head and parking lot. From here the trail to the summit is well marked. There is a lookout tower on the top that offers great 360 degree views of the surrounding area including a great view of High Point Village across Timm’s Lake. I usually have guilty feelings about summits that have “drive up” access but thanks to the conditions, I feel like I actually “earned” the peak.

Having bagged my fourth state highpoint I retraced my steps back to the car, enjoying the quiet and relatively warm weather. Timms’s Hill County park offers a great view as well as a surprisingly nice trail system with many paved trails perfect for a family bike outing.

Timm’s Hill County park is located near Prentice, WI. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Minneapolis and well worth a day trip to stand on the pinnacle of Wisconsin.
