Ascent Trip ReportFrom CR-514/Amwell Road east of Neshanic, take E. Mountain Road south to the entrance for the Sourland Mountain Preserve, a Somerset County Park. Pickup a trail map or see the map posted at the kiosk. Take the trail north and east to its closest approach to spot elevation 568 and then bushwhack about 1/3 mile through open but thorny woods. The summit is flat and indistinct, so GPS or at least a compass will help. High ground is at or near the unmarked Preserve boundary, and is within view of nearby private homes. For extra credit, follow your GPS 0.3 miles south from the summit to BM Neshanic, which is not easy to spot. Check out the BM on the geocaching website for photos and more info.
Private property blocks access to Sourland Mountain from all sides, except from the Preserve. The summit is slightly less than a mile from the Preserve parking lot as the crow flies, and requires almost 400 feet of gain.
