Ascent Trip Report

The night was uneventful and I woke up early, around 6:00am. I decided to be lazy and wait for other people to stir in the nearby tents, so I finally got out of ours around 7:30. I took my stuff out and set my sleeping bag to dry in the rising sun. I then went up the southern bump over the col to take pictures of our camp. Gabriel B had gotten up while I climbed and was starting to get the kitchen ready.

I went back down and slowly, everyone rose from their sleep. Meal was good, and the sun was showing signs that it'd be very bright that day. Around 10:45, we were ready to head off. We decided to head north, along a jeep trail marked on my maps. It incidentally was where we'd find the best slopes and where I could climb one of the region's 1000m summits. We had to bushwhack our way through a dense fir patch but on the other side it was vast open slopes of burnt land where we could see for miles out.

After about an hour, GPS showed we were only a few hundred feet from lac de la Tour. Francis and I, since we lead the group from a couple hundred meters ahead, split up. He went to the mountain's edge while I went to investigate the lake. I could now see where my goal summit was, directly west of the small lake. We then joined back and started again, going uphill towards Petit mont de la Galette, a rather nice sub-peak with wide open slopes, quite interesting for skiing. We decided to wait a little bit further up for the rest of the group, but they told us from afar that they'd ski from down there because of their lower skills. François continued on though and quickly met with us as we resumed the ascent. Soon we were almost at the summit, on the northern slope. It was completely bare and pitched down towards the valley at an angle of over 50 degrees. We stood there surveying the view, then I split from the guys going towards the summit while they backtracked to find nice skiing lines. My GPS showed an altitude of 1066 meters when I was at the highest visible point, and horizontal accuracy was of 2m (with DGPS). I'll really have to find a way to accurately measure altitudes, even if it involves buying or renting professional equipment. it turns out flora is quite sparse on the summit and not much seems to grow back from the last fires.

I could see mont de la Galette from this summit, but its slopes seemed densely covered by firs. I started to make my way down to the col but soon, the barren slopes gave way to dense forest. I started bushwhacking through and soon ended up on what seemed to be an old trail. I followed it for a little while until my GPS told me I was straying away from the summit.

I was now just past the col towards mont de la Galette.
