Ascent Trip Report

Came through Salisbury, CT following Mt Riga Rd across the mountain. This is a dirt road, but in good condition, if a little exciting when you encounter a car coming from the other direction. Coming down East St. through Mount Washington MA is a better road, but not always possible depending on the direction you are approaching from. I parked in the parking area that is about 10 yd. north of the monument marking the state line. There is enough room for probably six cars between the two sides of the road. Note that there is no cell signal at this location.

Round Mountain

Followed the well marked, red blazed trail from the parking area to the summit of Round Mountain. Somehow I missed a turn of the trail about 100 yd. short of the summit, but because of the amount of bare rock, it was easy to find an alternative path to the summit. There are very nice views in all directions from the summit.

Mount Frissell
Leaving the summit, and still (again?) following the red blazed trail, I descended the west side of the mountain to the col and then up to the summit of Mount Frissel. The highpoint is to the right where the trail goes toward the CT highpoint, but is easily visible from the trail at the point (no more than 20 yds), and is well marked. I signed the register. The register box has directions to the CT highpoint.

Mount Frissell - South Slope
Leaving the summit, I continued to follow the trail. I thought I had reached the highpoint, but had to do down a short slope before it continued to climb to the actual highpoint. Again, I signed the register, took some pictures and enjoyed the view while drinking some water.

CT-MA-NY Tri-point
The trail down the west side of the mountain takes you directly to the monument that marks the tri-point. According to my GPS, i wasn't directly at the point so I wandered around seeing if there was another.

Brace Mountain - North Peak
About 1/4 mile past the tri-point, I saw signs for the Ashley Hill Trail, but this does not lead to the summit. Continue straight to get to the intersection with the Taconic Trail. From there, I turned right and the North Peak was about 50 yd. up the trail. This summit has really nice views toward the west.

Brace Mountain
Looking from the North peak, I could see the flag flying over Brace Mountain. I followed the Taconic Trail, but almost got off track following the Jeep road shown on the topographic map. I'd only gone about 20 yd. before realizing I was going the wrong direction and backtracked. I should have gone right at the intersection. The Taconic Trail at the point is very wide, pretty much the same width as the Jeep road. Upon reaching the summit, I was rewarded with more views in all directions. I took more pictures and drank more water.

Brace Mountain - South Peak
The trail narrows significantly once you get past the summit of Brace Mountain and the undergrowth is right up against the trail cutting off visibility, and it was the only part that I really concerned about picking up ticks. The highpoint appears to be about 20 yd. off of the side of the trail where it starts to head back down hill.

I retraced my steps over the top of Brace Mountain, and then followed the Jeep trail down to Mount Washington Rd. From there it is a little over a mile back to the parking area.
