Ascent Trip Report

My route was based on Adam Walker's trip report on NWHikers.net, linked from this site. It worked pretty well as a relatively short day trip.

Saving 1.25 miles of flat PCT hiking each way by starting at Yodelin is a good idea, but I could not find an easy way to bushwhack from Stevens Road up to the PCT, either coming or going. Both times I blundered into heavy brush and could not consistently follow the overgrown roads in the area, but the distance was short enough so that it was not a big hassle.

The area west of Lake Valhalla is a maze of use trails, and snowbanks made them hard to follow, so I am not sure of the best route from the PCT to the lake outlet. The trail along the lakeshore is OK but rugged, and the area near the outlet is jumbled and confusing with big talus blocks.

My ascent route up the SW side of Lichtenberg is not recommended. I went straight up a chute, and it involved some annoying climbing on steep, slippery gray soil where it was hard to get traction. It was sporting, but unnecessarily dangerous. Much better to use my descent route both ways, the one that swings out wider to use gentle heather slopes the whole way. I managed to avoid serious brush.

I was fighting a cold this day and not moving my fastest. I did not attempt the west pinnacle. I met a father and his young son on top who came up from Lichtenwasser Lake. It was an absolutely perfect day weather-wise, my only quibble being mosquitoes in the forest. The hike out on the PCT seemed to take forever, but I was tired.
