Ascent Trip Report

After our evening dash up Klokos we drove E along the coast road then followed, c/o the trusty Garmin, a fairly complicated route to the trailhead. A church car park made a useful parking spot (N37.64831 E22.98283, 780m, GPSr) and we slept here in the car.

By morning light we could see a grassy track heading west which we assumed was the one shown on Google Earth. However we decided to head (south) straight up the hillside - a steep meadow with a lovely collection of wild flowers. Further up we trended R a little, following goat tracks through the thorn scrub, in due course emerging on a newish wind farm road (N37.64469 E22.98223, 913m). From here there is no obvious path, but heading more or less directly for the summit there are no significant obstacles. Once above the wind generators there are nice exposures of limestone, with fine views down L across a bay. The summit has a low ruined rectangular structure, perhaps the remains of a monastery or somesuch. Nearby is a battered square-section trig pillar; an outcrop beside it is the highest point, N37.64091 E22.96921, 1196m GPSr. Lower down, to the W is a tall mast and more wind generators.

We descended north, following the obvious old grassy summit track. This has been cut in places by the wind farm road but is not difficult to follow. Lower down it turns R (E) and passes through pleasant groves, back to the church car park.

We now headed back to Athens airport, making a minor diversion for the easy (but not all that quick) drive-up summit of Makriplani
