Ascent Trip ReportI spent most of this day exploring the Sognefjord, one of the classic Norwegian fjords, a narrow, deep, pure blue arm of the ocean penetrating a hundred miles inland between steep mountains. The morning was kind of cloudy, and I drove down to Hella along the fjord's shore and then turned around, but the afternoon was pretty sunny, and I went for a hike up to a peak called Storehaugen, surrounded by arms of the Sognefjord on three sides. The hike was up an ugly road in the forest, it was hot out, and there was an enormous TV tower on the summit, but the views of deep-blue fjord and steep green hillsides were fantastic. On the way back I saw a couple with their baby, the woman having removed her shirt due to the heat, a typically un-prudish Scandinavian thing to do, it seemed to me.
From the summit of Storehaugen, the panorama of the Norwegian fjords spread out below is simply awe-inspiring (1993-07-19).
