Ascent Trip ReportI drove along the road to Glacier Point, the last part a steep, switchbacking descent, and fought my way past crowds to the overlooks where you could look 2000 feet literally straight down to the valley I had just been in, as well as over to Half Dome. Pretty spectacular. I tried to buy an coke and failed due to crowds in a convenience store, used a bathroom, and drove up from Glacier point a very short ways to a roadside turnout for a short hike up to Sentinel Dome.
It was a short hike, but pleasant, through some sierra forest and then up the huge rounded rock of the dome (this one being whole, not half) to the summit, where wind and dark clouds marred the expansive panorama of the Yosemite area. I rested a bit, walked around, ate some candy bars, and had a tourist take my picture with Half Dome in the background before descending the west side of the dome for the fifteen minute walk on semi-open trails back to the car. At the base of the dome some day hiker had broken her leg or something, and a Park Service paramedic van had driven on a dirt road to get her on a stretcher and down to a hospital.
